Rolling Top 5® Manager Certification

A Rolling Top 5® Manager is recognized as a management sponsor who monitors day-to-day progress on Rolling Top 5® projects, assuring that they are properly resourced and moving rapidly towards completion. A Rolling Top 5® Manager will assist problem solving and problem prevention teams following the FACTUAL™, FUNCTIONAL™, or STRUCTUAL™ processes.

Candidates for Rolling Top 5® Manager certification are: Manufacturing, Logistics, Production Control, Engineering Managers, Divisional/Departmental Managers, Plant Operating Committee Members, and Plant and Engineering Supervision.

Course Requirements:

Attend Rolling Top 5® Executive class (1 day) within 18 months of applying for certification.

Attend the Problem Solving for Manufacturing or Problem Solving for Engineering class or the TransaXional® Problem Solving Analysis and Prevention class.

Lead the development of the Rolling Top 5® project selection process via workshops and one-on-one meetings.

Skill Requirements:

  • Actively sponsor a minimum of five completed projects by addressing roadblocks and issues at both the project and program levels with a focus at the project level.
  • Conduct a daily/weekly cadence of project reviews.
  • Participate in a regular cadence of executive reviews through presentation of sponsored teams’ project work and presentation of program status and progress (including number of projects closed, savings, certification achievements, etc.).
  • Demonstrate how projects are developed in the Focus/Scope phase of FACTUAL, FUNCTIONAL, or STRUCTUAL using the Rolling Top 5® process.
  • Demonstrate how successful projects are implemented during the Apply phase of FACTUAL, FUNCTIONAL, or STRUCTUAL.
  • Demonstrate how successful projects are leveraged within the site and across the organization during the Leverage phase of FACTUAL, FUNCTIONAL, or STRUCTUAL.
  • Participate in the Leading Change process to drive culture change and develop infrastructure to sustain the Rolling Top 5® program.

Submission Requirements:

Shainin certification emphasizes the demonstration of developed skills rather than the accumulation of knowledge. The certification package should include:

  • Output of Rolling Top 5® workshop.
  • Technical resource matrices (technical and managerial candidates).
  • Sponsorship matrix of five completed projects documenting role in Focus,
    Apply and Leverage steps of FACTUAL, FUNCTIONAL, or STRUCTUAL.
  • Documentation of review cadence of team leaders to management (management sponsor) and management to leadership (executive sponsor).
  • Project results (closed projects, project savings).

Endorsement:

To attain Rolling Top 5® Manager certification, a Shainin manager or principal must endorse the candidate. The Shainin manager will review the candidate's certification package and assess their ability as indicated in the skill requirements section above.

Time Limit:

A certification package must be submitted within 18 months of attending the Rolling Top 5 Executive® class.
