Green Y® Journeyman Manufacturing Certification

A Green Y Journeyman is skilled at identifying and correcting potential problems early in the process development cycle to prevent problems at launch and over the manufacturing life cycle. A Journeyman has been recognized for demonstrating the ability to:

  • Conceptualize high risk failure modes in the Analysis phase of FUNCTIONAL™.
  • Characterize, confirm, and tolerance X →Y relationships in the Verification phase of FUNCTIONAL.
  • Overstress the manufacturing process in the Validation phase of FUNCTIONAL.

To earn certification, the successful candidate must first be certified as a Green Y Apprentice. After certification as a Green Y Apprentice, the successful candidate must lead a completed Risk ReduXion® project and demonstrate proficiency with key tools in the Journeyman toolbox. Please note Apprentice certification is not intended to be a stopping point, but rather, is recognition of progress towards Green Y Journeyman certification.

Course Requirements:

The above courses have been revised to include the latest advances in Risk ReduXion Strategies. They are taught with an emphasis on developing effective strategies and the proper application of Shainin tools within the context of those strategies.

There are no prerequisite requirements for the Problem Solving for Manufacturing class. However, students will greatly benefit by being assigned a project so they can apply the principles and techniques. They will need access to a qualified coach (Shainin Consultant or Shainin Certified Red X Master) in order to successfully meet the certification requirements.

Skill Requirements:

Apprentice Certification:

  • Complete one Risk ReduXion project as team leader or team member.

Journeyman Certification:

  • Complete second Risk ReduXion project as team leader.
  • Submit a comprehensive set of tools (Scope Tree™, Function Model, FEMCA®, Linkage Matrix, Isoplot®, Confirmation Experiment (B vs W™, Full Factorial, Barrier B vs C™, etc), Tolerance Parallelogram™ or Concept Diagram and one of the following two: Process Characterization or Event to Energy Transform).

Submission Requirements:

Shainin certification emphasizes the demonstration of developed skills rather than the accumulation of knowledge.

Green Y Apprentice Certification:

To attain Apprentice certification a candidate must attend the Process Risk ReduXion workshop, complete the Problem Solving for Manufacturing class, and lead or be a team member on one Risk ReduXion project. The project must be submitted using the FUNCTIONAL template in a concise technical report presenting the strategy, evidence, reasoning, and lessons learned that resulted in successful completion of the project in accordance with certification standards.

Time Limit:

Apprentice candidates are allowed 12 months from the time they attend the Process Risk ReduXion workshop to submit their project.

Green Y Journeyman Certification:

After attaining Green Y Apprentice certification and attending the Journeyman courses, Green Y Journeyman candidates must lead an additional Risk ReduXion project. The project must be submitted using the FUNCTIONAL template in a concise technical report presenting the strategy, evidence, reasoning, and lessons learned that resulted in successful completion of the project in accordance with certification standards. In addition to the project submissions, a Journeyman must submit a toolbox demonstrating proficiency with key tools. This work may be demonstrated as individual tools or as part of the project submission. Two people may work together on this toolbox submission, and both may submit their work for credit towards certification.

Endorsement:

To attain Journeyman certification, a Shainin consultant must endorse the candidate through an interview. The consultant will assess the candidate’s proficiency in the following areas:

  • Conceptualizing high risk failure modes in the Analysis phase of FUNCTIONAL.
  • Characterizing, confirming, and tolerancing X → Y relationships in the
    Verification phase of FUNCTIONAL.
  • Over stressing the manufacturing process in the Validation phase of FUNCTIONAL.

Time Limit:

Journeyman candidates have 24 months from the time they attend the Process Risk ReduXion workshop to submit their two projects and toolbox.
