"Without Deming, the U.S. would not have had a quality philosophy; without Juran, it would not have had a quality direction; without Shainin, it would not have solved quality problems." - Keki Bhote
For over seven decades, Shainin has been a leader in the development of strategies and tools designed to advance the fields of product development and manufacturing through technical problem solving and problem prevention.
Dorian Shainin’s career in design engineering shifted in 1939, when he began his work improving the quality and reliability of a wide array of products including airplanes, automobiles, cassette decks, light bulbs, space ships, and disposable diapers. In 1952, at the urging of his friend and mentor Dr. Joseph Juran, Dorian became a consultant. During the 1960s, Shainin worked for Grumman Aerospace as a reliability consultant for NASA’s Apollo Lunar Module. Over the course of 60 years, Shainin developed over 30 statistically based techniques, working with companies representing in excess of 200 different industries ranging from the U.S. Department of Defense to AT&T.
Dorian Shainin was dedicated to the development of tools that were simple enough to be used on the shop floor and yet sophisticated enough to solve the toughest problems. Since Dorian’s retirement in 1995, that tradition has been upheld with Shainin, LLC; a global network of consultants serving a wide variety of companies, with a total client list exceeding 800. Shainin’s position as a contender amongst the world’s most renowned quality leaders has been further evidenced in publications such as Fortune magazine and World Class Quality.
Shainin has trained thousands of engineers in technical problem solving skills applicable to virtually any business sector, maintaining an aggressive research and development effort focused on refining problem solving techniques and strategies to make them easier to teach and apply. In the mid-nineties, Shainin further expanded their technologies through the release of software that automates and extends aspects of their problem solving methodology. Shainin technologies have also been strengthened in respect to risk reduction for product and process launches. Since the year 2000, Shainin has applied its experience and expertise to solving and preventing business process problems and enhancing problem solving and problem prevention cultures for industrial companies.
